The steam ship JOHN OXLEY was built in 1927 in Scotland. It served in Queensland for almost 5 decades where it was well-known along the coastline supporting navigational aids and undertaking pilot duties. JOHN OXLEY is the last remaining coastal steamer in Australian waters.
DescriptionJOHN OXLEY was built in Scotland in 1927 for the Queensland Government and operated by them in a dual role. It was used as a navigation maintenance and survey ship as well as for relief pilot duties. The ship was well fitted out and had a high quality steam engine and boilers installed. The vessel has a plated steel hull, wooden deck and wooden superstructure.

JOHN OXLEY remained in service until 1970 when it was donated to the Sydney Heritage Fleet. In 2006 JOHN OXLEY was taken out of the water on the Sydney Heritage Fleet's Sea Heritage floating dock where it is undergoing extensive restoration before it can be re-launched as an operating steam ship.
