Salt Water – Bark Paintings of Sea Country native title case

The Federal Court of Australia in 2005 accepted these Saltwater paintings as evidence in support of Yolngu claims for native title rights over 510 sq km of sea in the Blue Mud Bay region north-west of Groote Island. The Yolngu people won their case.

These paintings with their traditional hatched background patterns suggestive of water are considered a form of title deed.
